| Happy Koninginnedag! |
Poffertjes are everywhere too. It actually seems to be very popular down here to sell poffertjes at events in Australia — Just take a look around. I've seen them at two outdoor music festivals [Peats Ridge and Byron Bay Bluesfest] and sold as well from a hot dog-style cart on Australia Day. I was thinking of making some of those tonight for dessert... I do know how to make them from scratch and will add a twist of orange juice to the batter, just because. My recipe is attached below in this entry [click below to expand the blog entry].
Anyway, I have not forgotten what Koninginnedag was like when I lived in the Netherlands... I've remembered it since I left, and I aim to try to remember it each year. It was interesting to go to the center of the city and see how folks dressed in orange [oranjegekte = orange madness] and some sold their goods [vrijmarkt — the free market; more about this here] yard sale-style. It was always a gigantic day with events on TV, as well as events going on around in the cities and villages. If you've never experienced Queen's Day in the Netherlands, click here to learn more about it.
I've created today this mosaic [above], in honor of Queen's Day. I searched around inside and outside of the house to find whatever orange I could to share. I'm curious: those of you who are living outside of the Netherlands, are you celebrating Koninginnedag and how are you going to be doing it? Please do share in the comments here!
Last, but not least, here is my recipe for poffertjes:

Happy Queensday :)
@ Invader_Stu: Thank you so much! I hope you & your wife have a very lovely day :-)
Great pictures and did not know that Down Under dutchies still celebrate this day! Oh and poffertjes, love them!!
Last year I spend the day in NL, and with my family we visited the Openlucht Museum, we stayed away from a very busy Amsterdam :)
Have a good week!
@ Bertie: Bedankt! Queen's Day in Amsterdam is quite busy! I might do it one year, if I make it that way ever at that time. I always preferred the low-key version in smaller towns myself as well, though. I am so happy for those in NL that the weather was so perfect for the day too! I hope it was just as lovely in your neck of the woods as well :-)
I still live in NL as an expat and mostly try to escape on this day...I dont like the way the HAgue turns into an open-air-coffee-shop:( but on the other points I definitely agree with you:its fun to see the orange-dressed people and its nice party (when the grass-smoke is not too much;)
belated happy queens day! i love the collage like of photos. .Great job :)
@ Jana: Thanks so much for your comment! I recall how I too felt my own personal bit of avoidance of that day outside while I lived there as well... Thankfully I never had to smell much of the pot smoke because I lived in a very conservative neighbourhood, outside of the city centre. My neighbours were so well-organized to a point that the sudden burst of orange colours everywhere on the street seemed somewhat comical :-) Although it was really unlike them all of a sudden, I also liked seeing them look happy -- For once ;-) Thanks again for your comment!
@ Daphne: Thank you very much & thanks to you too for your comment! I hope you enjoyed your Queen's Day :-)
You have a wonderful collection of photos depicting the "oranjegekte"! :) It looks amazing, such a bright colour everywhere and ON everyone! :)
Who would've thought that Koninginnedag would be even celebrated in Australia! I had no idea...
Can you believe that I hadn't tried poffertijes until a couple of weeks ago?
Groetjes!
Thank you, Aledys Ver! They do get into it down here too, in pockets - KLM has a "Dutch Orange Day", for example:

What did you think of the poffertjes? Have you tried the pannenkoek yet as well?
Groetjes terug en bedankt voor je reactie :-)
Hou echt van hoe Koninginnedag wordt gevierd in Australiƫ. We proberen om het te vieren hier in CA ook met de familie.
